![]() Postdoctoral Scholar: Remote Sensing (Dept of LAWR at UC Davis) Postdoctoral Scholar: Remote Sensing (Dept of LAWR at UC Davis) Job number: JPF04111 Home department: LAND AIR & WATER RESOURCES (Agricultural and Environmental Sciences) BACKGROUND INFORMATION Post-doctoral research position: Remote Sensing We are seeking a highly motivated, organized, and dynamic scientist to fill a Postdoctoral Researcher position in remote sensing at the University of California, Davis (UCD) to work on a project titled: Development of a Low-Cost and Accessible Evapotranspiration Toolkit for Irrigation Management of Almonds and Other Woody Tree Crops. The incumbent will work within a large collaborative group of scientists and faculty from the Departments of Land Air and Water Resources (LAWR) and Viticulture and Enology (V&E) at UC Davis and from multiple USDA-ARS units, including the Crops Pathology and Genetics Research Unit (Davis, CA), the Sustainable Agricultural Water Systems Research Unit (Davis, CA), and the Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory (Beltsville, MD). The incumbent will also work closely with government agencies and local stakeholders, particularly almond and grape growers throughout the California Central Valley. Efforts of the Remote Sensing Postdoctoral Researcher will be directed toward the application of land surface and hydrologic models using satellite and aerial imagery for estimating evapotranspiration, soil moisture, bio-meteorological and plant physiological characteristics and compare model output with ground truth data. Objectives include refining algorithms to more effectively manage irrigation inputs in woody perennial crops over large acreages while accounting for spatial variability within fields. The incumbent will also have the opportunity to collaborate with UAV/drone imagery specialist and work closely with UCD researchers and faculty affiliated with the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Institute for Next Generation Food Systems (AIFS) to develop cloud computing and machine learning techniques designed for near-real-time irrigation strategy, forecasted water use information, and within season yield prediction. RESPONSIBILITIES 90% o Develop and refine remote sensing-based algorithms to more effectively manage irrigation strategy in almond orchards. o Develop near-real-time workflows for decision support. o Build scalable systems designed for regional applications. o Develop and pursue new approaches related to the integration of remote sensing and machine learning for precision agriculture. o Prepare manuscripts for publication. o Coordinate project group meetings with stakeholders from government, academic, extension, agricultural, tech, and private sectors. o Present results at conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals 10% o Extension, Mentorship, and Outreach QUALIFICATIONS: Job location: Davis, CA Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
