We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated Postdoctoral Scholar researcher with demonstrated coding skills to work on analyses of spatially distributed snow datasets from distributed models and remote sensing products (e.g. snow cover area, snow depth, snow surface temperature, etc) at different spatiotemporal resolutions with a focus on machine learning techniques. This research fellowship is offered for 1 year (12-months) and renewable pending funding availability. The ideal start date is mid-January 2021. The postdoc will be hosted in the UW Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, will interact with the Mountain Hydrology Group, the eScience Institute and other groups on campus. The immediate supervisor is Professor Jessica Lundquist, and the co-mentors are Professor Jessica Lundquist and Research Scientist Nicoleta Cristea, Nicoleta Cristea.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in one or more areas related to data science (machine learning, statistics, large-scale data systems, visualization, Github project management, interfaces that facilitate large-scale data understanding) that can apply to analyzing spatial datasets. The postdoc will collaborate on spatial analyses, software development, cloud computing, research manuscripts and other activities designed to advance the research and practice of data-driven and data-intensive discovery in snow science. Ideally, the successful applicant will prototype or reuse other code where the outcome will be a software tool developed in collaboration with researchers at the eScience Institute.
The UW eScience Institute is a data science environment aiming to empower researchers from all fields with tools and skills to answer challenging science questions through the use of large, complex and noisy data. As a hub of data-intensive discovery, the UW eScience Institute leads a community of innovators in the techniques, technologies, and best practices of data science and the fields that depend on them. The postdoc will receive a UW Data Science postdoctoral fellowship that includes $2,000 for research-related expenses (including travel) upon appointment and access to up to an additional $5,000 of research funding following a lightweight competitive proposal process which will take place twice each year, in ~January and ~June.
Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. Duties and Responsibilities:
Analyze and process remote sensing and model spatial datasets
Develop and Integrate existing Python code into Python modules and packages for distribution and publication of geospatial packages
Assist with code documentation and scientific writing assignments
Help organize, conduct and participate in training events as needed
Present a seminar in the eScience Community Seminar series
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Well-honed organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and timelines
Ability to work with colleagues in a way that enhances collaboration and team building
Proficiency in processing spatial data
Experience with machine learning techniques
