The Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) located in Palisades, New York, is seeking a Research Staff Assistant (RSA) to join its reputable team. Under close supervision and guidance from the Senior Research Scientist, the RSA will support data cleaning, data processing and data analysis tasks of spatial data sets using remote sensing, GIS, and scripting techniques. Supports descriptive and exploratory analyses through coding. Troubleshoots and solves technical problems during server-based data downloading and processing. Works with other GRID3 staff at CIESIN and across partners to support project workflows.
Produces integrated data products for use in applied research projects, involving remote sensing, GIS, and field data. Performs data cleaning, integration, and statistical and spatial analyses of spatial datasets.
Supports data analysis tasks as needed. Identifies patterns, dynamics and spatial relationships. Supports data automation and processing documentation through scripting. Supports QA/ QC tasks in R, ArcGIS, and/or other relevant software.
Monitors development in scientific literature and applications concerning spatial data analysis. Supports the development and management of interactive data access and mapping tools.
Participates in project meetings and workshops. Provides technical support and troubleshooting as needed.
Works in coordination with other staff at CIESIN in order to successfully accomplish the project's milestones and deadlines.
Reports to and receives close supervision and guidance from the Senior Research Scientist and project leaders.
Exercises independent judgment and initiative within specific parameters set by the supervisor.
Bachelor's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or other (STEM)‐related program is required.
1-2 years of related experience required.
Demonstrated skills in programming in R, R Studio, and/or Python for data cleaning and/or data processing tasks is required.
Must have knowledge of GIS software such as GRASS, QGIS, and ArcGIS.
Previous experience in data processing and management of large spatial/ remote sensing data sets is required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
Ability to work well in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.
