Postdoctoral Investigator - Physical Oceanography
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join the Advanced Framework for Arctic air-sea Fluxes Group in the Physical Oceanographic Department. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year with possible second year continuation contingent on progress and funding. We are seeking a highly motivated, organized, and independent scientist for a Postdoctoral Investigator position at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The postdoctoral position is part of a NOAA-sponsored new initiative dedicated to developing improved quantification of Arctic air-sea energy exchange through integrating surface observations from autonomous saildrones, surface mooring stations, and satellite remote sensing at high latitudes. Within this project, the Postdoctoral Investigator will contribute to the development of an optimization framework that synthesizes satellite active and passive sensors to improve the accuracy of surface variables under polar low and high wind conditions , and the development and testing of a deep artificial neural network framework to improve satellite retrievals of near-surface thermodynamic variables in the Arctic environment. The team includes also members from the NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Lab (PMEL), Earth System Research Lab (ESRL), and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The successful Postdoctoral Investigator will have the opportunity to work with the team to gain an improved understanding of surface energy budgets and air-sea-ice feedbacks in a thawing Arctic. The Institution has a top-rated postdoctoral program ( www.whoi.edu/postdoctoral/ ) that supports a dynamic postdoctoral community with formal mentoring and career guidance programs. While the primary focus of the work will be in research, the Postdoctoral Investigator will have an opportunity to participate in educational and outreach activities associated with the project. Online application forms should be submitted with a complete curriculum vitae, cover letter, brief statement of research interests and career goals, up to three relevant publications, and names and contact information for at least three references. For questions, please email Dr. Lisan Yu (lyu@whoi.edu). Position is available immediately. Preference will be given to applications received by November 30, 2020 but applicants will be considered until the position is filled. Required:
