Essential Job Duties:
The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will provide scientific and technical support in the area of climate assessment science and data analysis. Primary duties will be in support of interagency activities for global, national, and regional assessments of climate change and relevant research supporting the value chain from data products to societal benefits. Anticipated activities and research studies will include understanding of observed changes in environmental parameters, analysis of future projected changes in these parameters, and linkages to environmental and social impacts, as well as development of adaptive pathways.
Duties & Responsibilities: The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will contribute to climate science analyses and targeted cutting-edge research on topics important to the federally mandated quadrennial National Climate Assessment as well as associated sustained assessment activities. This will include analysis of new climate model simulations, particularly the CMIP6 suite that is currently under development, new statistically downscaled datasets, and observational datasets including in situ and remote observations and reanalyses. Targeted research topics may include increased process understanding of potential future changes in regional temperature variability, precipitation, drought, extreme weather and climate events, new approaches to downscaling of climate projections, impacts, and important climate modes of variability (e.g., El-Nino Southern Oscillation, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, Atlantic Decadal Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation).
-Fully participate in unit (NCICS, project teams, NCEI, etc.) activities and meetings -Make timely presentations at appropriate scientific venues as requested or needed -Other related duties as assigned
Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.
-Ph.D. in Earth or Environmental Science (atmospheric science, geography, etc.), engineering, or related field -Completion of Ph.D. by start date of appointment -Experience with analysis of large observational and/or model climate datasets -Demonstrated oral and written communication skills -Personal enthusiasm for the project goals -Ability to multitask and meet deadlines -Must be able to work independently as well as make positive team contributions.
-Experience with CMIP5 and/or regional climate modeling datasets and analyses -Experience with reanalyses -Experience with in situ and remotely sensed datasets -Experience with the development and use of statistically downscaled datasets -Experience with modern methods of statistical analysis of weather and climate extremes
