D-Lab helps Berkeley faculty, staff, and graduate students move forward with world-class research in data intensive social science. We think of data as an expansive category, one that is constantly changing as the research frontier moves. We offer a venue for methodological exchange from all corners of campus and across its bounds.
D-Lab provides cross-disciplinary resources for in-depth consulting and advising, access to staff support, and training and provisioning for software and other infrastructure needs. Networking with other Berkeley centers and facilities and with our departments and schools, we offer our services to researchers across the disciplines and underwrite the breadth of excellence of Berkeley's graduate programs and faculty research. D-Lab builds networks through which Berkeley researchers can connect with users of social science data in the off-campus world.
Assists the executive director in all aspects of program planning and implementation.
Develops and implements D-Lab programs, which include special projects, training, and consulting; coordinates with other units on campus such as administrative offices, centers, and departments; manages external relations.
Functions as a resource to all D-Lab staff on issues such as researching complex financial discrepancies, student HR and outside provider compensation issues, escalated customer service problems and vendor concerns.
Assesses and recommends changes to maintain compliance with campus policy, federal and state requirements, and internal policies.
Supervises team of students. Hires, trains, establishes goals and objectives, assigns and monitors workflow, evaluates, develops, and makes hiring/rehiring decisions.
Interview undergraduate staff, interview graduate staff; orientation, training, development and management of undergraduate and graduate staff, CalTime tracking.
Assists the executive director in the development, maintenance, and oversight of budgets with multiple funding sources.
Provides analysis for complex budgetary funding, financial, and resource projects.
Applies advanced concepts to research, analyze, and forecast in order to determine future resource allocation on projects.
Demonstrated communication skills including verbal and written skills.
Demonstrated ability to manage a program with a broad spectrum of support services.
Mastery of a variety of program management tasks, such as budget creation, financial analysis and reporting, forecasting, managing calendars, and event planning
Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, and problem-solving in complex settings with short turnaround time.
Advanced interpersonal communication skills to include verbal and written, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills.
Ability to work independently with only occasional supervision and prioritize among competing priorities, capacity to balance responsiveness to D-Lab staff and users with long-range planning and execution.
Expertise in Excel, Word, Google Suite of Applications, Asana, MailChimp.
Content knowledge and domain expertise in at least one data science field (e.g. data archiving, text analysis, geospatial analysis, survey analysis).
Comfort working in a fluid environment with many different kinds of interactions, ability to negotiate complex social relationships and dynamics, customer service orientation.
Advanced skills in designing, documenting, and overseeing implementation of operational procedures.
Advanced organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes and diverse staff constituencies, including professional staff and graduate and undergraduate students.
Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
Three to five years work experience in a similar environment.
Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.
Project and program management training or equivalent experience
Bachelor's degree in related Social Science or Data Science field or similar.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
