Postdoc Appointment to Study South Asian Monsoon Dynamics The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences (CEEES) at the University of Notre Dame, in partnership with the Environmental Change Initiative at the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, seeks to hire a postdoctoral scholar to conduct foundation research on South Asian Monsoon dynamics using high-resolution climate models. The position requires a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences or a related discipline, and demonstrated experience implementing and running the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model over large spatial domains at high-spatial resolutions.
The initial appointment at the University of Notre Dame will be for one year, with the potential to extend for an additional 1-2 years, depending on performance and available research funding. The position offers competitive salary, comprehensive benefits, and low cost of living.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in atmospheric sciences or related discipline with expertise in meteorology and climate modeling. Ability to lead key elements of the research effort, and work independently with limited supervision Demonstrated skill in conducting and analyzing high-resolution meteorology simulations using the WRF model. Demonstrated skill in climate model evaluation using in situ and satellite observations of surface and atmospheric conditions. Familiarity with UNIX, Fortran, NetCDF, GIT or other version control software, and Python/R/NCL/IDL or other data visualization and management languages. Experience working on high-performance computing facilities with parallel processing codes, ability to modify the codes; and write scripts to efficiently process large input and output data sets. Strong written and oral communication skills, and demonstrated experience publishing research results in high quality, peer-reviewed journals.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience writing competitive research proposals In-depth knowledge of seasonal to interannual monsoon dynamics In-depth knowledge of climate impacts on snow and mountain hydrology Experience developing and refining land surface models to improve simulations over oceans and complex terrain. Knowledge of remote sensing approaches and algorithms Experience with WRF-CHEM, and WRF-URBAN model variations
