Description of Position The GIS Specialist’s primary responsibilities is to create, develop, test, and edit geographic information systems (GIS) data sets; produce GIS maps; maintain GIS web services/systems; develop web & mobile map applications; conduct spatial and non-spatial data analysis; and support the University of Minnesota’s GIS technical infrastructure. The GIS Specialist will primarily work with University of Minnesota physical plant data sets, such as building footprints, roads, and utilities. This individual requires strong organizational skills, strong troubleshooting skills, strong communications skills, and an ability to carry out a variety of tasks with limited supervision. The GIS Specialist reports to the University Services GIS service area.
50% Provide GIS Services – Develop, document, and deliver GIS products and services. Examples include hard-copy maps, GIS web services, interactive web maps, mobile map applications, and spatial analysis. Deliver end-user support to University Services customers.
30% GIS Data Maintenance – Create and maintain geospatial data pertaining to University of Minnesota campus locations. Fill University Services GIS data needs. Ensure that GIS data organization, completeness, and accuracy meet application needs.
20% GIS System Maintenance – Provide ongoing maintenance of the GIS technical infrastructure. Includes support for desktop, web, mobile, and server based applications; also includes database support. Assist with planning for and documentation of the University of Minnesota GIS technical infrastructure.
Work Environment Work is primarily performed in an office setting, though there will be some outdoor field data collection work required.
Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Planning, Engineering, Surveying or related field; or a combination of four (4) years of GIS related education, training, and work experience.
One or more years of experience with Esri ArcGIS software products; especially ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, ArcGIS Server, and ArcGIS Online.
Basic GIS web technology knowledge and experience.
Some experience with mobile GIS applications such as Collector for ArcGIS.
Experience integrating computer-aided design (CAD) data in a GIS system.
Basic understanding of relational databases.
Experience developing physical infrastructure data for assets such as utilities, buildings, parking, transportation, and outdoor spaces.
Intermediate skill with Microsoft Office or similar products.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the essential principles and practices of GIS and cartography.
Knowledge of Esri ArcGIS applications.
Ability to accomplish complex GIS tasks.
Ability to work independently.
Strong problem-solving skills.
Good communication skills (verbal and written).
