The Sr. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst reports to the Manager Information Systems and is responsible for creating, maintaining, and supporting all activities associated with GIS and other JHFRE geodatabases, including maps of campus or specific parts of campus, document management and geospatial web applications for internal department and University use. Performs difficult, advanced technical work planning, coordinating and directing GIS personnel, systems and services, formatting and producing display style maps and data, assisting system users and departments concerning mapping program; Oversees the preparation and maintenance of GIS data files and records.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Develops and manages project plans and serves as project leader on the University's GIS initiatives; effectively manages multiple projects and tasks.
Manages, edits, delivers, and supports main GIS, SDE, and SQL databases and related datasets, feature classes, and layers.
Supports Real Estate and Planning areas ensuring GIS, parcels, and land records are updated and accurate.
Prepares written documentation of all GIS systems, such as Standard Operating Procedures, and participates in cross-training/knowledge sharing with IT/GIS staff.
Produces detailed maps on request by extracting and manipulating data from GIS databases.
Design and create geodatabases, develop content and provide training.
Author scripts, document workflows and automate repetitive tasks.
Coordinate with project managers to receive construction project updates, create spatial location services, and ensure their upkeep.
Edit/maintain cartographic representations.
Provide support for construction and other real-time mapping applications.
Perform quality control checks of spatial data, web maps, and geo-based applications.
Participate in geo-data repository data evaluations, metadata creation/updates, data loading, and troubleshooting as needed.
Support operations and software installations/maintenance.
Maintain floor plan conversion process.
Act as data publisher for Facilities' mapping portal.
Interface with other University-wide data interest groups to promote awareness of data resources, products and services among staff and University offices through outreach and embedded activities.
Develop and lead instructional sessions for Facilities and Real Estate staff about the use of various GIS data resources and tools, and best practices for data access, collection, management, and preservation with a targeted focus on utility and construction planning data.
Monitor the landscape of GIS data management plans and design support services to respond to these requirements.
Develop and maintain awareness of data-centered strategies and technologies across Ivy-plus universities and attend relevant conferences and workshops for his/her continuing professional development.
Conduct informal and formal service- and resource- needs' assessments of assigned departments in an interactive, ongoing fashion, and communicate these needs via committees and various channels.
Develop program for curriculum-based instruction sessions about GIS information resources and topics for assigned users or departments.
Bachelor's degree in geography, regional planning, natural resources, engineering, computer science or related discipline.
Three years related experience required.
Five years of related experience preferred.
Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Three years' experience with Esri's ArcGIS desktop and extensions.
One year of experience with mapping SaaS platforms, preferably Portal for ArcGIS.
Experience with AutoCAD or Microstation, Microsoft Office, Python, SQL, ModelBuilder, and ArcSDE; GIS interior space mapping software.
Experience with 3D software and workflows (e.g., SketchUp, CityEngine).
Experience with managing GIS and surveying projects using Esri geoprocessing tools.
Experience with building ETL routines with FME or other scripting environments.
ArcGIS Server and Enterprise geodatabase.
Strong analytical thinking and problem solving skills.
Strong organizational, project/process management, and data management and analysis skills.
Attention to detail and accuracy.
Interest in learning, using, and demonstrating software systems/technologies; service-orientation.
Ability to effectively collaborate and build consensus with a diverse group.
GISP certification preferred.
Familiarity with national data standards, open source platforms, and GIS within facilities management preferred.
Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
Ability to operate a computer and other equipment on a frequent basis.
Ability to frequently communicate with coworkers.
Ability to move about.
