Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Earth System Cyberinfrastructure
The George Mason University, Center for Spatial Information Science and Systems (CSISS) in the College of Science invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position. The successful candidate will primarily work on an interdisciplinary NSF EarthCube Integration project, the CyberWay, funded by the National Science Foundation. This position is full-time with benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year, renewable based on performance and the availability of funding.
The incumbent will work with a multidisciplinary team from collaborative institutes and organizations for the EarthCube Integration project. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Work directly under the Principle Investigator to participate in designing, developing, and implementing the cyberinfrastructure system of systems through integrating the capabilities and systems of multiple existing EarthCube building blocks;
Assist the PI and participating scientists in design, execution, and modeling of interdisciplinary Earth science studies with the systems to achieve science-driven project goals; and
Actively work with the PI and collaborators in preparing and publishing the research results in scientific journals and conferences.
The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in Earth Systems and Geoinformation Sciences or closely related field at the starting time of the appointment;
Hands-on experience with open geospatial Web service standards and specifications;
Experience in Earth science modeling with strong programming experience;
Working knowledge of Earth science modeling;
Working knowledge of geoscientific cyberinfrastructures;
Experience in Web-based geographic information system design and development;
Experience in using Java, C/C++ or other languages for scientific programming and processing geographic information system (GIS) data;
Experience in using databases for managing GIS data; and
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
Experience with Open-Source geospatial software packages, e.g. GDAL and OSGeo packages;
Familiar with OGC and ISO TC 211 standards and specifications;
Experiences with large system development in cloud computing and Web environment; and
Research experience in teleconnection studies of large climate and atmospheric systems.
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
