Responsibilities: 40% Performs research and scientific analysis on geospatial data, satellite imagery, and crop insurance information; researches and recommends new data sources for future use
30% Develops and runs algorithms to process and validate geospatial data using SQL and Python; Updates and maintains spatial datasets inside an enterprise data warehouse
15% Tests web mapping interface and determines best cartographic practices for visual interpretation of data; develops new geospatial application ideas
10% Provides support and technical expertise to coworkers and clients for all GIS related functions; presents web mapping applications and geospatial analysis projects to clients
5% Performs other duties, as assigned
Required Education and Experience: Bachelors degree in geography, geographic information systems, or related field; 3 years of GIS experience, including acquisition and management of spatial data, map production, and geospatial analysis; Proven experience in ArcGIS Desktop, ESRI suite of GIS tools, and Python scripting; Experience writing algorithms and conducting analysis in SQL with a firm understanding of relational database theory;
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Expert knowledge of coordinate systems/map projections, data resolution, data types, FGDC and OGC standards, and cartographic best practices; Ability to produce professional, high quality, GIS-based cartographic products; Ability to multi-task, self-direct, conform to shifting priorities, and work in a team environment;
Other Requirements: Must qualify for USDA security clearance.
Preferred Requirements: Masters degree in geography, geographic information systems, or related field is preferred. Previous use of remotely sensed data and weather data is preferred. Experience administering and tuning an enterprise geodatabase; and experience creating map and image services within the ArcGIS Server environment is preferred.
