Job Description Description: The Conrad Blucher Institute is part of one of the nation's largest integrated academic and research program in surveying, GIS and geospatial computing. For the past 25 years the CBI has developed and maintained research and operational software serving communities in Texas and the rest of the US. The Conrad Blucher Institute is seeking a software Applications Developer II to join its Information Technology team. The candidate will assist or lead broad information technology projects for the institute. The new member of the team will routinely perform complex and specialized software development, systems administration and client technology/end user support functions, such as troubleshooting, analysis, research, debugging, problem-solving, etc. The candidate should enjoy working in a team environment and interacting with other staff members of the institute, researchers, faculty, and operations specialists. The candidate will also be tasked to train, supervise, mentor and delegate tasks to student IT employees.
Responsibilities: Software Development
Design, develop, deploy and maintain custom software written in dynamic scripting languages (Perl and/or Python) on primarily Linux-based systems with web-based user interfaces (UI) and application programming interfaces (API).
Automate tasks with tools and various dynamic scripting or programming languages (e.g., bash, Python).
Jump into existing, unfamiliar systems/codebases and perform troubleshooting, diagnosis and propose/implement solutions.
Install, configure and maintain Linux-based servers (CentOS/RHEL).
Install, configure and maintain services such as Apache, LDAP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, software firewalls (ipchains, FirewallD), SELinux, DNS (BIND/named).
Contribute to the design and maintain relational database systems.
Automate common tasks with tools or programming.
Ensure systems comply with University standards.
Within a diverse user environment, manage desktop and laptop computers through all stages of PC lifecycle.
Facilitate IT solutions for CBI staff and projects in cooperation with campus IT.
Recruit, interview, hire, train, supervise, mentor and review students to support Institute needs.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field.
Three (3) years' System Administration experience including troubleshooting and repairing systems, services and other server-related issues including software, configuration, networking, resource bottlenecks.
Two (2) years' software development experience building, deploying and maintaining operational systems.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Master's Degree in related field.
Experience with dynamic scripting languages. E.g., Perl, Bash, Python, PHP.
Experience with SQL/RDBMS - database design and manipulation.
Experience with back-end web development including CGI or PSGI (Perl) or WSGI (Python) or Rack (Ruby).
Experience simplifying, automating and orchestrating infrastructure deployment using tools such as Puppet, Ansible, or packaging software using containers. Cloud computing configuration and deployment experience a plus.
Experience with user-facing desktop/laptop hardware and software support and life cycle/management.
Experience Installing, configuring and maintaining Linux servers/VMs.
$4,286.58 - $6,858.50 Monthly
