Job Summary The research scientist will work in the lab of Christian Frankenberg on questions related to remote sensing of plant ecophysiology. The candidate will apply an interdisciplinary approach to link the mechanisms driving solar-induced fluorescence and vegetation reflectance to photosynthesis.
Job Duties - Work with current and ongoing measurements from a coupled leaf level gas-exchange + active/passive fluorescence instrument, canopy spectrometers, and airborne data from the Chlorophyll Fluorescence Imaging Spectrometer - Active engagement in the research group by working with graduate students and postdocs, as well as scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, UCLA and collaborating institutions - Publish in competitive scientific journals, present at conferences, and collaborate with researchers across the globe - Actively pursue new funding opportunities for him/herself and the lab group - Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications - Ph.D in remote sensing/ earth sciences/ ecophysiology/ natural resources, or related field - Proven experience in terrestrial remote sensing applications, solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence, plant ecophysiology, and have worked across a range of scales (leaf, tower, airborne) - Strong publication record - Ability to work closely with other members of the lab group and are expected to engage with the greater Caltech/JPL/UCLA research communities - Must be skilled in data analysis (Python), statistics, scientific writing and communication
Preferred Qualifications - 3 or more years of experience since Ph.D. - Postdoctoral experience - Demonstrated ability to secure own funding through proposal writing - Ability to monitor and troubleshoot autonomous canopy spectrometers - Knowledge and experience running leaf gas-exchange instrumentation - Ability to collect and interpret both active and passive Chl fluorescence data - Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
