Detailed Job Description: The School of Physics and Astronomy at the Rochester Institute of Technology invites applications for one or more tenure-track faculty positions in experimental physics to begin August 2019. The position is anticipated to be at the rank of Assistant Professor, however, exceptional candidates with experience and qualifications consistent with appointment at a higher rank may also be considered. Applicants must have the demonstrated ability to establish and maintain a vigorous experimental physics research program (based in-house and/or in collaboration with large-scale facilities) within, but not limited to, such broadly-defined areas as solid-state or soft condensed matter, applied materials and device physics, quantum technologies and information, gravitational wave physics, atomic-molecular-optical (AMO) physics, neutron and x-ray science, biological physics, and physics of complex systems. Individuals with programs having the potential to expand RIT's research activities, seed collaborations with current faculty, and significantly grow RIT's research profile are being sought. Candidates are expected to have the demonstrated ability, or strong potential, to obtain external research funding.
Effective teaching, education, and research mentoring of our students is a high priority at RIT. The primary teaching effort within the School of Physics and Astronomy serves both undergraduate and graduate students, accompanied by a teaching mission in support of RIT's growth in graduate programs across the science and engineering disciplines. Successful candidates must have a demonstrated strong commitment to excellence in teaching. Individuals are expected to be eager to and capable of teaching and developing courses across all levels of our physics undergraduate and graduate programs, especially for the laboratory component of the curriculum. A plan to integrate and mentor students at a variety of levels must be part of the candidate's research program.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field, and have postdoctoral experience. Candidates must have strong communication skills and demonstrate an overall commitment to the educational, research, and teaching mission of the School of Physics and Astronomy. Department Description: The School of Physics and Astronomy consists of 38 fulltime faculty, 8 postdocs, 200 undergraduate physics majors, and 30 astrophysics graduate students. The School offers a BS program in Physics, a PhD/MS program in Astrophysical Sciences and Technology, and is launching a new MS program in Physics in Fall 2019. Faculty in the school currently also contribute to graduate programs in Materials Science & Engineering, Microsystems Engineering, Sustainability, Imaging Science, Mathematical Modeling, and Applied & Computational Mathematics. The College of Science leads six of RIT's nine major research centers, namely, the Center for Computational Relativity & Gravitation, the NanoPower Research Laboratory NanoPower Research Laboratory, the Laboratory for Multiwavelength Astrophysics, the Center for Detectors, the Digital Imaging & Remote Sensing Laboratory, and the Center for Advanced Teaching Learning & Evaluation. Currently, RIT has identified five Signature Research Areas, and the College of Science leads three of them, i.e., the Future Photon Initiative, Frontiers in Gravitational Wave Astrophysics, and Unmanned Aerial Systems.
