The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University (OSU) invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor with a focus on computational ocean science.
We seek a colleague with expertise in exploring ocean dynamics using physics-based numerical modeling tools, and who will develop and maintain a vigorous, research program applied to either ocean circulation or atmosphere-ocean coupled systems. We welcome applications by candidates who specialize in developing novel computational tools and/or data assimilative methods applied to a range of data types and temporal/spatial scales. We also encourage applicants who have an interdisciplinary focus that would connect with existing CEOAS strengths, e.g., atmosphere-ocean interaction, biogeochemical ocean modeling, paleoclimate reconstructions, or beach evolution/sediment processes.
We seek an outstanding scholar who will investigate earth-system processes by advancing: i) forecasting and predictive capabilities (ocean and/or atmosphere states), and ii) interpretation of complex physical and/or coupled problems through incorporation of incomplete data sets in analyses and models. The successful applicant is expected to maintain a cutting-edge research program supported robustly by funding sources possibly including private foundations or industry. The candidate should demonstrate an ability to compete effectively for new research opportunities and help support cross-college interdisciplinary collaborations, potentially including those associated with real-time data presence in the marine environment of the Pacific Northwest.
The successful candidate is expected to raise significant external research funds and to contribute to the educational mission of the College at the undergraduate and graduate levels by teaching courses at the upper-division and/or graduate level.
It is expected that the incumbent will secure external research funding to support 60% of their full-time salary. For research-focused positions, it is CEOAS policy to confer indefinite tenure when promoted to Full Professor, with the indefinite tenure granted on a 12-month, 0.75 FTE appointment basis.
CEOAS is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. The position will contribute to the continued excellence of CEOAS in ocean and climate science within a high profile and extensive campus-wide framework of ocean-related studies, and position CEOAS for addressing critical issues of ocean health and climate at National and State levels. The College is developing a new interdisciplinary focus on preparing for natural hazards in a changing world, and candidates with relevant expertise are particularly encouraged to apply.
OSU – through CEOAS – is recognized as one of the nation's best in oceanography. It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and three oceanographic research vessels, the 177-foot ocean-going Oceanus, the 84-foot coastal research vessel Pacific Storm, and the 54-foot coastal research vessel Elakha. In addition the College is embarking on exciting new developments, managing the design and operation of new Regional Class Research Vessels, and establishing a coastal campus through the undergraduate Marine Studies Initiative. The College's budget has significant support from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Office of Naval Research, and other federal and state agencies and industry interests. It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate students and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include Master's and PhD degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and Geography and a Master's degree in Marine Resource Management. The college has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Geography and Geospatial Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs. CEOAS works closely with OSU's extension programs.

Typically requires PhD or terminal degree (Masters for some Extension positions and MLS for Library positions), demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom Extension, or other setting, and develop a research program in the academic discipline/unit.
Ph.D. in Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, Geophysics, Physics, or another related discipline by the start of employment.

Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position may require working in office, classroom, laboratory, and/or field environments. Field work may require working in rough terrain, inclement weather, and strenuous environments and conditions. The ability to travel as needed to advance research program may be required.
