The Applied Physics Laboratory-University of Washington (http://www.apl.washington.edu) seeks a leader with exceptional strategic, financial, operational, and interpersonal capabilities to join its senior leadership team as Director of the Office of Business and Finance (“B&F Director”).  The B&F Director reports to the Executive Director, Lisa Zurk, PhD., and is responsible for supporting and stewarding the finances and operations of the APL-UW’s research activities with a commitment to service and technical excellence that will also sustain institutional compliance. The B&F Director is the Laboratory’s chief financial officer and is a member of APL-UW’s Directorate, the Laboratory’s senior leadership team.

The B&F Director has overall responsibility and authority for all financial business functions of the Laboratory including financial strategy and planning and capital investment strategy and planning. The B&F Director has overarching responsibility for all Laboratory matters concerning financial management, grants and contracts, export control and transportation logistics, procurement, intellectual property and technology transfer, and external/internal financial communications.  The position oversees department managers who are responsible for day-to-day financial management, compliance, purchasing and procurement, property control, grant and contract administration (including negotiations, reviews and endorsements), Pro-rated Direct Cost (PDC) budget preparation and administration, investment plan budget preparation and administration, and financial information systems.

One of the highest near- to mid-term priorities for the B&F Director will involve financial, operational, and project management related to constructing a new building for the Laboratory, which will include consolidating the Laboratory from five existing buildings into the new building and disposing of outdated Laboratory assets.

The Applied Physics Laboratory of the UW was established in 1943 and provides access to the highest levels of academic expertise in scientific research and engineering. Administered by the UW Office of Research, APL-UW consists of eight science and engineering departments as well as centralized technical, logistical, and administrative support functions APL-UW conducts research and development that is wholly funded by sponsored grants and federal contracts.  Laboratory expertise spans acoustic and remote sensing, ocean physics and engineering, medical and industrial ultrasound, polar sciences and logistics, environmental and information systems, and electronic and photonic systems.   The Laboratory receives $55-70M in grant and contract revenues annually, and is staffed by approximately 250 regular employees and up to 100 additional temporary employees.
