The Physics Department (http://www.physics.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Assistant Project Scientist in the fields of innovation, sustainability, and green technologies. Under the direction of Professor Sue Carter, the incumbent will assist in the development and implementation of the IDEA Hub incubator facilities across campus, with focus on the S-lab incubator, which provides facilities and mentorship for students working on innovations that promote the sustainability of natural resources and global prosperity. We have a preference for candidates with expertise in green tech, innovation and entrepreneurship, project management, and for those with experience managing student projects in the area of sustainability.
The Assistant Project Scientist will oversee the operation of S-lab equipment; contribute to the development of safety protocols, training modules, and Student Operation Procedures (SOP); manage incubator space to support student projects and innovation and collaborations (including grant proposals) between the S-lab, the IDEA-Hub, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), the Office of Sustainability, and Rachel Carson College. In addition to presenting results from his/her activities at conferences, events, and publications, the Assistant Project Scientist will assist students working in the IDEA Hub with their presentations and publications. Due to the nature of this position, it would be beneficial for the incumbent to possess previous experience with preparing publications and grant applications. Possible related areas of research include innovation and sustainability, agtech and biotech, renewable microgrids, waste and water management systems, green building, remote sensing, 3D design and fabrication, cradle-to-grave analysis, and device fabrication and characterization.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Ph.D. in electrical engineering, materials science, applied physics, or related field
At least one year experience in setting up and overseeing a laboratory facility, in adherence with Environmental Health and Safety protocols.
POSITION AVAILABLE: July 1, 2017
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: The initial appointment will be at fifty percent tim (but with the potential of being increased up to one-hundred percent time) and for a period of one year, with the possibility of reappointment through June 30, 2019. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon availability of funding.
