The Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington is a nationally ranked education and research program. The Department of Electrical Engineering has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer II. This position serves as the Operations Manager for the UW BioFabrication Center (UW BIOFAB). The BIOFAB is a unique service laboratory operating through the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Washington. Clients use the Aquarium software to store sample information and remotely submit molecular biology and microbiology jobs. Technicians in the BIOFAB execute the protocols and upload the results to Aquarium for clients to review.
Under minimal guidance from the Principal Investigator and BIOFAB Director, the Research Scientist/Engineer II is responsible for the direct oversight and management of all laboratory operations and personnel in both the Klavins Lab and BIOFAB. In particular, the BIOFAB Operations Manager would coordinate new workflow and protocol integration and improvement; lead customer recruitment, onboarding, and acclimation; create and maintain the BIOFAB image; run the BIOFAB Strategy Team; lead BIOFAB marketing; and direct regular updates and QC of all BIOFAB rates and services.
Laboratory Operations and Management
Advise on inventory systems and databases using the Aquarium software for all chemicals, supplies, reagents, and biological samples in the BIOFAB.
Direct lab staff to perform regular quality checks on all reagent and sample stocks.
Work with the Principal Investigator and Laboratory Manager to assist with laboratory-wide EH&S compliance for the BIOFAB including BSL-1/BSL-2 inspections, and BUA approval and documentation.
Research and integrate new equipment into the BIOFAB.
Experimental and Research Functions
Design, test, and integrate new protocols and techniques into existing BIOFAB workflows to improve standardization and efficiency. Evaluate current and proposed protocols for accuracy, reagent conservation, and validity of resulting data.
Coordinate with the BIOFAB Laboratory Manager to update current protocols.
Coordinate with new customers to integrate new protocols into the BIOFAB.
Manage the Programming Team to ensure all updates are carried out and integrated into Aquarium.
Work directly with Principal Investigators, postdoctoral fellows, students and laboratory staff in the design of scientific experiments; provide background data and information to determine the correct and accurate scientific methodology and experimental steps.
Regularly review, analyze, and troubleshoot all experimental results for all BIOFAB processes including plasmid verification, sequencing data, yeast strain verification, flow cytometry, yeast mating, and fragment amplification. Assist BIOFAB staff and customers with reviewing, analyzing, and troubleshooting of experimental results.
Perform regular QC of all BIOFAB services.
Advise BIOFAB lab managers and staff in operation processes, Aquarium software, and experimental procedures.
Lead the BIOFAB Strategy Team.
Coordinate the efforts of the Lab Team, Programming Team, Funding Team, and User Team to ensure the BIOFAB is meeting monthly, weekly, and quarterly goals.
Software development and Improvement
Serve as the primary contact for customers with questions and issues with the Aquarium software.
Work with BIOFAB programmers to troubleshoot Aquarium software issues as they arise and make improvements.
Manage the development and improvement of all Aquarium protocols, which requires: -Overseeing and coordination with BIOFAB programmers. -Translating biological protocols into programmable protocols.
Oversee regular updates of BIOFAB rates.
Working with the Budget Fiscal Analyst and Laboratory Manager, assist in providing information required to perform cost analysis for all BIOFAB services.
Provide information from suppliers and vendors that the BFA will compile to determine and institute accurate, appropriate prices for all services.
Work directly with the BIOFAB Budget Fiscal Analyst and Laboratory Manager in invoicing procedures for the BIOFAB.
Review and analyze purchasing trends, explore options for cost saving measures and efficiencies.
Onboard and acclimate new customers.
Recruit new customers by researching potential customers and presenting the BIOFAB message to potential customer bases.
Acclimate new customers to Aquarium.
Assist new customers as they begin submitting jobs to the BIOFAB.
Create and maintain the BIOFAB image.
Ensure all BIOFAB staff, communication, and lab space are presented as professional, organized, and efficient.
Direct BIOFAB web presence, marketing, and social media.
Regularly meet with new and current customers to ensure their needs are met by the BIOFAB.
Update BIOFAB customers with new features, services, and changes in BIOFAB procedures.
Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, microbiology or related field.
Two-three years experience working in a molecular biology laboratory environment with a focus on molecular cloning and including two years working specifically with the Aquarium laboratory management software or similar; and two years experience in laboratory management.
Advanced understanding and skills of basic biological lab techniques such as PCR, plasmid and yeast strain cloning, sterile technique, and maintaining stocks.
Experience ordering and organizing lab equipment and supplies.
Experience with laboratory safety duties.
Demonstrated ability to understand and follow established experimental protocols. Ability to learn new research techniques, and improve the lab's standard procedures.
Ability to collect data in a consistent, reliable and accurate manner.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a collaborative team.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
Strong detail orientation and ability to adeptly manage multiple deadline dependent priorities.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
