The Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Human and Physical Geographer under the direction of Dr. Adina Paytan. The successful applicant will support an interdisciplinary NSF-funded project exploring the influences of biogeochemical and ecological data on public perceptions of ocean desalination and the impacts of these perceptions on coastal desalination policy in Southern California. The applicant will be encouraged to expand the program by developing proposals dealing with related aspects of coastal water security. We are especially interested in applicants who possess any or all of the following preferred qualifications:
Experience with applying quantitative social science analyses
Experience working on interdisciplinary research teams and with government agencies
Knowledge of coastal ecological processes water treatment technologies
Demonstrated experience developing, writing, and submitting research proposals
Familiarity with remote sensing and GIS analysis
RANK: Assistant Project Scientist, Step 1
Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in Geography or relevant field and at least
A minimum of three years interdisciplinary training or post-doctoral experience spanning aspects of social sciences, physical and human geography, and environmental sciences relevant to water security and specifically desalination.
Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory processes and policies associated with siting and approval of seawater desalination in California.
POSITION AVAILABLE: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: The initial appointment is for two years. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon availability of funding.
