Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, use established hydrologic and climate modeling techniques to develop Earth Science Data Records in support of pre-mission planning for the proposed U.S.-French Surface Water and Ocean Topography satellite mission, and development of methods to predict likely changes in the frequency of hydrologic extremes over the next century. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: a) develop time series of surface water storage change over global lakes and reservoirs using existing radar altimetry and visible satellite imagery; b) perform regional climate simulations using WRF regional climate model, and evaluate predictions of future precipitation and streamflow extremes; c) assist in extensions to the existing UCLA regional drought monitor,; and d) perform reporting as required by project sponsors for the above activities.
Remote sensing processing experience specific to land cover classification and vegetation indices.
Experience with Geospatial Information Systems (GIS).
Experience with managing large data sets and interpreting multiple data formats, such as HDF and netCDF.
Knowledge of Fortran and Python programming languages and ability to write new code and work with legacy code.
Strong background in mathematics, statistics, and/or image processing.
Ph.D. Degree in Engineering or Geography or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
