The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research center at the University of Washington. Its mission is to monitor global health conditions and health systems, as well as to evaluate interventions, initiatives, and reforms. IHME carries out a range of projects within different research areas including the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors; Forecasting; Costs and Cost Effectiveness; Geospatial Analysis; Resource Tracking; and Impact Evaluations. The aim is to provide policymakers, donors, and researchers with the highest-quality quantitative evidence base to make decisions that achieve better health.
IHME has an outstanding opportunity for a Technical Project Coordinator. The main purpose of this position is to facilitate and manage activities related to strategic planning for malaria elimination projects, ensure timely and efficient coordination among different teams and team members pivotal to the computational process, monitor and assess adherence to data and coding protocols, help manage technical workflow, and create and manage clear action plans to achieve deadlines and produce deliverables. A unique aspect of this position will be to help manage the Malaria Modeling Consortium, a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funded project involving multiple modeling teams from institutions in Seattle, the United Kingdom, and Thailand.
The Technical Project Coordinator must navigate multiple teams and complex project logistics while focused on key details of the data, a website, and code development to facilitate effective coordination between different teams in order to achieve deadlines. He/she must develop an understanding of the interdependencies among key analytic components. The individual will need to monitor and assess adherence to data and code protocols, track progress against deadlines, and help resolve roadblocks. He/she facilitates strong communication among teams, schedules and orchestrates meetings, and manages action item lists that result from them. The individual will focus both on facilitating novel model development and facilitating research to inform disease- and intervention-specific parameters for malaria. He/she must be able to communicate well with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and knowledge bases. Most important, the Technical Project Coordinator must carry out his/her responsibilities with a high degree of accuracy, timeliness, and awareness to help flag priorities and potential problems in order to find solutions that keep the project progressing on tight timelines. This position will work alongside other staff on complementary projects and will require knowledge and skill sharing and collective problem-solving. Overall, the Technical Project Coordinator will be a critical member of an agile, dynamic research team. This position is contingent on project funding availability.
Project Management Analytic Coordination and Implementation
Be a technical resource to data professionals and modelers by understanding the details of various databases and sharing technical knowledge. Field and address questions and problems identified by modelers and data professionals when using shared tools and code. Anticipate bottlenecks, assess and prioritize potential issues, identify and implement solutions.
Help negotiate access to data and facilitate data sharing among malaria elimination partners.
Facilitate data entry, quality checks, and implementation of central computational machinery in order to produce high-quality estimates of health indicators on deadline.
Monitor and assess adherence to data and code quality protocols among researchers and data professionals.
Design, implement, and maintain quality management processes to track workflow and to make explicit the interdependencies between data, tools, and data visualizations. Track progress against flowcharts and other project management tools in order to identify quickly and accurately issues that must be resolved in order to meet deadlines.
Assess quality of code comments and documentation whose purpose is institutional knowledge-sharing.
Help to standardize and implement project management tools used to ensure high-quality and timely technical coordination among modelers, data professionals, and other team members.
Work directly with IHME faculty and staff to facilitate strong communication and coordination across all the teams contributing to malaria work within IHME and among the modeling groups. Schedule, orchestrate, and support meetings, devise and track follow-up action item lists, and maintain key meeting documentation.
Detail complex analytic processes through the creation of flowcharts and other visual aids. Introduce these schemata and aids into the management workflow of different teams. Support teams using them in best practice for their design.
Coordinate implementation of code versioning and improvements to code.
Coordinate dissemination and review of preliminary results and track follow-up items for modification.
Understand project goals and translate those goals into action to deliver complex products on deadlines.
Publications, Presentations, and Data Requests
Support the coordination and submission of manuscripts for publication. Provide referencing and background research support for publications and presentations.
Create high-quality, accurate, and sharp presentations detailing complex analytic processes and progress against timelines.
Assess queries for novel data requests and identify what actions and resources would be required to fill them.
Become familiar with substantive areas of expertise to understand the dimensions and uses of health data for malaria in complex multidisciplinary analyses. Specifically, and most important, understand the main precepts, inputs, and aims of malaria elimination and the Malaria Modeling Consortium.
Understand the myriad complex interdependencies of different analytic components of malaria transmission dynamics and control and the relationship between data, tools, and data visualizations.
Work directly with researchers to track and address questions and problems identified when accessing data or using tools and shared code.
Serve as central point of contact to organize and facilitate calendars, travel, and logistics for IHME team members and the Malaria Modeling Consortium to aid in dissemination, consultation, and research management.
Create smooth and efficient processes for archiving and maintaining project records, including study protocols, meeting reports, presentations, publications, funding requests, and other materials as needed. Make all materials available as needed to project participants.
Perform literature reviews, background searches, and article summaries as needed to support research endeavors, advance one's own learning about and fluency in relevant global health topics, and prepare for and help develop project materials.
Help to manage events including research conferences, training workshops, and dissemination events, including logistical support and materials creation.
Convey technical strategies and describe bottlenecks and proposed solutions to both technical and non-technical staff in order to achieve common understanding and resolution among team members.
Communicate clearly and effectively while contributing as a productive member of both the project team and the Research Management Team. Work closely with other team members to help them with relevant tasks, guide them in the development of new skills, and to help resolve emerging problems on different projects. Attend relevant meetings, adhere to deadlines, and participate in collectively advancing team-level objectives.
Perform additional duties as assigned that fall within the reasonable scope of this position as a member of the Research Management Team.

| Bachelor's degree in social sciences, sciences, mathematics, engineering, or related field plus two years' experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. |
