The Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington (ess.washington.edu) invites applicants for a full-time Research Assistant Professor (Job Class Code #0143) in planetary science. Preferred research areas include, but are not limited to, geochemistry and thermodynamics of planetary processes, especially aqueous geochemistry of cold brines relevant to Mars, icy moons, and the Earth's polar regions. We are particularly interested in individuals who are able to combine laboratory measurements (e.g., of new thermodynamic parameters) with numerical models and test hypotheses using data from planetary exploration. However, we encourage candidates who investigate any aspect of planetary geochemistry to apply. Additional desirable attributes would be the potential to collaborate with University of Washington researchers in glaciology, remote sensing, or in life in extreme environments, and the potential to participate in the University's cross-campus Astrobiology Program.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in Geophysics, Geology, Planetary Sciences, or a related field at the time of appointment. While the successful candidate will primarily be engaged in research, all University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. Opportunities for participation in the teaching program will be available through seminars, occasional classroom lectures, and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. This is a multi-year, full-time (100% FTE), 12-month non-tenure track position that is contingent upon available funding. There is no state funding associated with this position.
