The Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, is receiving applications to teach one upper-division level class entitled ENVS 116: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems during Spring quarter 2018.
This courses teaches the basics of GIS to create maps, overlay different geospatial datasets, and investigate a wide variety of geospatial questions. Students will will focus on methods of generating, querying, analyzing, and displaying geospatial data with the industry standard software suite, ArcGIS.
The quarter is 10 weeks long, with an 11th week for finals.
$6,600 per course
Ph.D. in Environmental Studies, Environmental Sciences, Geography, or a closely related field. Expertise with ArcGIS software (version 10.1 or higher) required. Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching in GIS required, experience with Python and large data sets in teaching preferred. We are particularly interested in a candidate who has experience in mentoring students in GIS-based environmentally-focused projects.
Faculty responsibilities are specified by the Santa Clara University Faculty Handbook (sec. 3.6). Duties include but are not limited to:
A. Teaching one lecture section of ENVS116 during Spring quarter 2018.
B. Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with the assigned course, including:
1. Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared way; 2. Assigning and evaluating assignments that align with the course description and course learning outcomes, and providing timely feedback to students; 3. Holding regular weekly office hours on campus; 4. Submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline; 5. Administering numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses; 6. Fulfilling other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or the Chair of the Department.
