The Energy Geosciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory welcomes applicants for a postdoctoral associate position in the field of integrated hydrologic modeling. The principal effort of the position will be on a project focusing on a watershed straddling the Sierra Nevada and Central Valley interface, with the goal to better understand groundwater storage dynamics. This role will require the integration of remote sensing and historical data into a numerical groundwater-surface water model. The developed model will be used to assess and forecast system perturbations like climate extremes (e.g. prolonged periods of drought, high intensity rainfall events, etc.) and changes in water management (e.g. increases in managed aquifer recharge, changes in agricultural practices, etc.). You will have experience developing and running hydrologic simulations and a working knowledge of high performance computing environments.
What You Will Do:
Analyze and assess historical water-use, meteorological, and remote sensing datasets such as GRACE.
Develop and apply high-resolution/high-fidelity integrated hydrologic models.
Collaborate and engage with a team of hydrologists, climatologists, and computer scientists to improve predictive capabilities of groundwater dynamics.
Synthesize large datasets generated by high performance computing.
Author peer-reviewed journal articles and technical reports.
What is Required:
PhD in hydrology, civil, or environmental engineering.
Experience in numerical hydrologic models.
Experience in cluster and/or high performance computing environments.
Experience working with and manipulating large datasets with scripting languages such as C++, python, etc..
Ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists.
Ability to author peer-reviewed journal publications and technical reports.

This is a full time, 1 year and 8 months, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
