The Yale Peabody Museum (YPM) is among the oldest, largest, and most prolific university natural history museums in the world. The Head of Biodiversity Informatics Research will support the development of an expanded vision for biodiversity and specimen-based informatics that links the YPM scientific divisions and other university activities with the goal of ensuring access to and sharing of biodiversity data developing national and international leadership roles in this arena. Reporting to Curator of Informatics, responsibilities for the Head of Biodiversity Informatics Research include: create a strategic vision in the areas of natural history informatics system design and architecture; advance the innovative use of informatics tools for the synthesis and utilization of biodiversity information in research and education; set priorities and develop plans and initiatives related to Biodiversity Informatics and Data Science; partner in the development of grant proposals for funding of informatics projects; facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations and research programs at the museum, University, national and international level; serves as liaison and/or representative of YPM.

Required Skill/ability 3: Developer's level understanding and competency in informatics web application and database development (e.g., Java, Apache/HTTP, PHP, MySQL, Ruby), scripting (e.g., Python, Perl), and geospatial analysis (e.g., ArcGIS, R, web mapping).
Required Skill/ability 4: Advanced systems administration skills with one or more of the following: Unix servers, Windows servers and/or desktop computers. Advanced knowledge of Unix, Windows and/or MacOS operating systems. Proven ability in application of digital imaging technology to museum collections; cloud architecture, cloud data flows and pipelines; and Web GIS development.
Required Skill/ability 5: Demonstrated ability in taxonomic integration, such as familiarity with concepts and tools addressing taxonomic harmonization. Familiarity with taxonomic naming concept management and formal knowledge representation addressing ontologies and semantics.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: 1. Ph.D. in natural sciences or computer sciences. 2. Relational database management and SQL, with Postgres/PostGIS. 3. Previous experience with highly technical and collaborative projects.
Required Licenses Or Certifications:
1. Master's degree in natural sciences or computer sciences and 5 or more years of experience in planning, development, and implementation of biodiversity informatics projects or equivalent combination of education and experience. 2. Competency in innovative approaches for data integration and data fusion.
